In the novel Freak the Mighty, Kevin is succumbing to his lifelong illnesses caused by birth defects in the hospital. Kevin gives Max a blank notebook to remember the adventures they have had over the previous year.

Knowing that Kevin is incapable of much physical activity as a result of his condition, and that the previous year had been one of great growth and excitement for him, Max agrees to write down his memories of their adventures together. Without knowing it, Max has his final conversation with Kevin about the notebook, because, as Kevin wanted to have the stories recorded, he sent Max away to write them. When Max returns, Kevin has passed away from heart failure. Max is able to reminisce about the adventures they shared through the notebook and keeps his memories alive in the stories he wrote down.

In chapter 23 of Rodman Philbrick's Freak the Mighty, Kevin gives Max a book with blank pages. Like Kevin's dictionary, the empty book is something which Max will be able to fill up with thoughts of his own. Kevin tells Max to fill the pages with "their adventures." Kevin knows that he is not going to live much longer, given his condition. Although Max does not want to face Kevin's inevitable death, Kevin admits that he will not have the time to do it himself. This leaves the task to Max alone.

Therefore, Kevin's gift to Max is a blank book in which he can write down all of the adventures Max and Kevin had together.
