John left home and drove at the rate of 45 mph for 2 hours.  He stopped for lunch then drove for another 3 hours at the rate of 55 mph to reach his destination. How many miles did John drive?

John left home and drove at the rate of 45 mph for 2 hours.

The distance driven by him in these 2 hours is 45*2 = 90 miles.

After lunch he drove for another 3 hours at 55 mph.

The distance driven by him in these 3 hours is 55*3 = 165 miles.

The total distance he drove to reach his destination is 90 + 165 = 255 miles.

The total distance that John drove is 255 miles.

We will calculate the total distance that John traveled.

First he drove 45 mph for 2 hours.

Then we will calcilate D1.

==> D1 = S*T = 45*2 = 90 miles.

Next, he drove at 55 mph for 3 hours.

==> D2 = S*T = 55*3 = 165 miles.

==> Then, the total distance he traveled is :

D = D1 + D2 = 90 + 165 = 255 miles.

 

Then, John drove a total of 255 miles.
