Both Jacob and Edward are evenly matched, according to Meyer. Edward has speed and strength, and Jacob is a werewolf, an entity that has the power to kill vampires. Werewolves are protectors, if you remember from the books, and they are the only real evenly-matched enemy of vampires. This tension between the two is a good plot device -- the two want to fight each other and feel intense hatred towards one another, but they refrain from violence for Bella's sake. The rivalry between Edward and Jacob for Bella's love is a strong driving force in the book series.

It seems like Edward has more to fight for in a battle between both of them.  If we use their respective relationships with Bella as a guide, the relationship between Jacob and Bella seems like a good friend.  She uses him as the shoulder to cry on when Edward leaves at the start of the second book and while he does develop feelings for her, it seems like Bella will look to him as a steady and reliable friend.  While he does have feelings for her, they will always be muted because the relationship between Bella and he will only reach a certain level.  If we examine the relationship between Edward and Bella, we see something different.  This particular bond is one based on transformation and the desire to escape what is into a world of what can be.  For example, when she realizes that she has powerful feelings for him, Bella wishes to be a vampire, leaving the world of being a human behind.  Edward is poised between being a vampire and denying Bella, or allowing her to enter his world, one he considers to be a curse.  (Assuming only in the first book.)  This level of connection or bond seems much more profound, much more powerful and the type of relationship where there is much more at stake.

If we use this as a guide or a paradigm to evaluate the strengths of both Edward and Jacob, we can see that Edward would probably win in a conflict because he is fighting for much more in his relationship with Bella than what Jacob has.  One other advantage that Edward has is that we know he has supernatural powers and extremely strong powerful reflexes for he uses his strength to save Bella.  We have yet to see (at least in the first book) Jacob demonstrate the same qualities.  We know Edward has the physical stamina to be able to mount a successful offensive against Jacob because of his defense of Bella.

The only reason I would say Edward is because he would fuel what he has with Bella in this and has more experience as a fighter while Jacob turned into a werewolf not as far back.

Now that would probably be the battle of the century. However, if I had to put my money on it I'd go with Edward. Why? It's because Edward has experienced much more than Jacob and because of that it gives Edward more skill in fighting and more of a will to fight. I'll never forget Edwards burning man episode he was going through in Breaking Dawn. When Edward became that man who was burning inside even Jacob had to admit to himself that he was a little intimidated of Edward he was.

If Jacob and Edward fought who do you think will win?

Definitely, Jacob will win. Both of them are of equal importance to Bella and they in turn gave the same for Bella. But when Bella was depressed of missing Edward, her best friend, Jacob Black, gave her shoulders to cry. Friendship always wins though some love may fail. There is a love failure...Have you ever heard of Friend failure. Jacob's bond is always strong for Bella and he has the best capacity to win although he doesn't want to in order to save his friendship with Bella.

I agree with #5. Yes indeed Jacob will win if only Edward wants him to. If it wasn't in the case of Bella that the two would be fighting, Edward would win.

Jacob is actually made by nature like that to kill vampires but it still seems like a mystery that if Jacob and Edward fought, who will win.

Edwards supernatural power is also a question to who will win.

i definitely think edward would win...edward is fast, strong but so is jacob in his wolf form....but edward has one advantage that jacob doesn't.he can read minds..edward would easily be able to read jacob's mond and predict all his future moves or attacks whereas jacob won't be able to do so.this means that edward would always be prepared for any trick that jacob intends to play on him during a fight

I'd love to say Jacob but the fact that it took a whole pack of wolves to take out Laurent and to keep a single vampire at bay (Victoria) makes me dubious. Although Jacob is credited by his pack as being "a natural" so he could potentially prove me wrong.

I think Jacob would win also because Jacob is ruthless while Edward doesn't have that animal instinct in him. Although Edward is a vampire, he has a lot of the human characteristics left in him. While Jacob doesn't regret in doing anything violent, Edward is the opposite. So I think regardless of their similar physical powers, their opposite nature will give Jacob an upper hand in the battle.

I think Edward would win, because he is so much faster and even if Jacob had the advantage of being stronger (which he might do, but I get the feeling Edward is), Edward would be able to run far away from Jacob without being caught up.

Also, I believe Edward would win, because he has rock hard, inpenetrable skin, so if Jacob was in wolf form, his scratches done by his claws would do nothing and wouldn't draw blood (well, venom, not that he has blood!). Also, Edward wouldn't get bruises from punches or kicks and the chances are he wouldn't feel them, as the punch wouldn't go further than his skin.

Although Jacob does have his advantages. One, even if he wasn't in wolf form, he would still be much larger than Edward, and even if this was a remote possibility, due to Edward's speed, Jacob would be able to lie on him like a pile-on (that does sound quite childish, I agree, but it is a possibility). I can't think of anymore advantages in a fight a wolf would have, so Edward would be far better in a fight.

Edward and Jacob run at about the same speed I think. Plus the fact that Jacob can fun for days at a time. And if Jacob was in wolf form he actually would be able to penetrate Edward's skin. Wolves and fire are the only enemies of vampires (besides the Volturi) in Twilight. A wolf is the only creature that could defeat a vampire, because that's what they're built for. Jacob can heal fast and therefore would be evenly matched in a fight between him and Edward. :D

Jacob would win. My opinion has nothing to do with strength, speed, or stamina. It is simply a matter of love. While both Jacob and Edward love Bella, Edward is the one who would walk away to see Bella happy. Jacob doesn't seem to have that nature in him. Jacob would kill Edward if provoked (maybe even unprovoked) without thought of Bella. Edward, on the otherhand, would never harm Jacob simply because of his love for Bella; Edward knows hurting Jacob would tear Bella apart. In the end, Edward may simply walk away or be obliterated, but simply because of his deep love for Bella.

However, since Jacob imprinted on Nessie, I don't think the two men fighting over Bella is ever going to be an issue.
