Many people consider Odysseus to be a hero, but ultimately it's a matter of personal perspective. Odysseus isn't very heroic when you consider how careless he is with the lives of his men and some of the decisions he makes.

Odysseus isn't a careful person. His men die repeatedly on his journey home because he isn't more careful. For example, he attempts to sail past Charybdis and Scylla and doesn't give anyone else information about what could happen. Because he's aware of the dangers, he survives. Some of his unwitting men, however, are killed.

Odysseus is depicted as more of a villain than a hero. Despite some of his achievements, he has certain qualities that make it apparent to argue that he is not a hero. First, his failures are seen where he is unable to protect his sailors and instead sacrifices them. Second, he kills the suitors rather than sending them away even after his wife had reunited with him. Third, his arrogance and carelessness land him and his men in serious trouble throughout the odyssey. For instance, as they are safely escaping, Odysseus yells out his name to the Cyclops, which later causes him to lose more men.

"Cyclopes-If any man on the face of the earth should ask you Who blinded you, shamed you so, - say Odysseus Raider of cities."(Book 9)

All the above characterize Odysseus as lacking certain heroic traits such as wisdom, selflessness, righteousness, and gentleness.

He is a hero in a way but I'd say that he's not a hero because of the way he acts in certain situations. Those situations, like the one with the cyclops, are inexcusable. He acted very offensivly to the cyclops, personally i would have let him eat me. The poor guys been in a cave his whole life, he's lonley and hungry. Now the cyclops has to live with no eye because Odysseus was acting in a non-heroic way.But whtev he is soooo not MY hero! He sooo totally will like NEVER be.
