On his way to his fateful sojourn in Alaska, Chris McCandless stops awhile in Carthage.  Chapter 7 deals with Wayne Westerberg's and Gail Borah's recollections about the young man, whom they knew as Alex.  Westerberg and Borah remember Alex as being hard working, but not mechanically inclined.  He seemed to think differently from the norm, revealed unhappiness with his family life, and was well-read and a gifted musician.

The chapter ends with two brief correspondences from Alex, as he prepares to go "into the wild".  He evidences a foreboding that he may not return.
