If I injured my ankle playing basketball, did I sprain it or strain it? Is this different?
Your ankle injury could involve both a strain and a sprain. A strain is an injury to the muscle (body of the muscle), or to the attachment of a tendon. Strains are commonly seen in "overuse" injuries that involve a stretched or torn muscle or tendon attachment. It is also possible that you may have fractured a bone, but highly unlikely because the bones of the ankle are very strong and durable.
A sprain is an injury to an articulation (joint), like the wrist, knee, or ankle that involves a torn or stretched ligament.
Regardless of the fact that the injury is a strain or a sprain, the treatment is the same. Rest, analgesia (pain control), compression (ace wrap), elevation of the extremity. These measures are aimed at decreasing the swelling. When the swelling goes down, the ankle will feel better.
