Organizations develop information systems because they have a large amount of information that they need to store and use. The larger and more complex the company, the more complicated an information system that company is going to need to store and access the data.

I would think that the most important reason would be to have better access to data about their own company.  By creating an IT system, they would be able to have things like databases of information about the firm's processes and products.  This would allow more people to access the information more easily, thus making it easier to know how efficiently the firm is working.
