Role strain occurs when a person has difficulty maintaining the expectations of a singular role. For example, if you are a student, you may find that it is sometimes tough to keep up with emails from your teacher, organize your calendar to meet deadlines, maintain obligations for group projects, write the paper using the format your history teacher requires, and arrive at class on time when your campus is so large. All of these struggles occur because you are a student—within one singular role.

All people have multiple roles in life, however. You may be a student, but you also may be a daughter, employee, girlfriend, sister, friend, church member, sorority president, and granddaughter. Sometimes your responsibilities in these roles will create conflict. Imagine that you look at your school calendar and realize that this week, you have two quizzes, a paper due at the end of the week, and two meetings with your chemistry lab group. You know that school is going to take a great deal of your time, and then your boss texts to let you know that she's going to need you to work extra shifts this week because she is short-staffed. Quitting your job may not be an option, and you realize that you are going to have to somehow work extra shifts for your job and somehow find the time to do all of your schoolwork well so that you can keep your scholarships. This feeling of being pulled in two different directions by two different roles in your life creates inner conflict, which is role conflict.

I hope these examples help you consider the role strains and role conflicts you have witnessed in the world around you. Good luck!
