"The Swimmer" is a short story written by John Cheever. The narrator of the story, Neddy Merrill, decides to "swim home" across one suburban pool after another in the neighborhood in which he lives. He nicknames the path of pools the "Lucinda River" after his wife's first name. His journey is a metaphor for the years of his life.

Here are the pools, in order, that he swims in on his journey home:

Westerhazys

Grahams

Hammers

Lears

Howlands

Crosscups

Bunkers

Levys

Welchers (empty -break in the chain)

Lancaster Public Pool

Hallorans

Sacheses

Biswangers

Shirley Adams (old mistress)

Gilmartins

Clydes
