In addition to all lessons that the other answers here mention, Calpurnia teaches Scout a lot about the African American community in Maycomb. Calpurnia is the only African American that Scout has regular contact with. In Chapter 12, Calpurnia takes Scout and Jem to her church. After the service, the three of them walk home together; Scout is bursting with questions.

Calpurnia explains why Mrs. Robinson is unable to find work. She learns how someone can be ostracized simply because of what a family member has been accused of, even if it is clear that those accusations have no validity. She sees how the congregation is dedicated to helping out a member of their community and does not judge her for what her husband is accused of.

Scout also learns about code-switching. She notices that Calpurnia talks very differently to her friends and neighbors at the church. Scout remarks that Calpurnia usually speaks quite formally when in the Finch home, yet is using a particular dialect among the African...
