These two characters are both manipulative and harmful men in the separate tales, and their similarities show some of the traditional aspects of abusers and kidnappers. Arnold Friend and the Misfit are both adult men who are on the fringes of society (the Misfit quite literally being labelled as a misfit because of his inability to fit into normal society), and they attempt to abuse women with whom they interact.

Both men show an ability to be very manipulative and convincing, relying on their knowledge of human emotions and sympathy to convince the women on whom they are preying to make themselves vulnerable. Arnold coaxes Connie out by trying to tell her that she washed her hair for him, making him seem sympathetic and charming. Eventually, when this doesn't work, he resorts to threatening her family, knowing that she will protect them at all costs.
