In The Healers, Densu dresses as a servant for the white general named Glover. After Densu praises Glover and depreciates himself, he gains Glover’s esteem. Though Glover can’t pronounce Densu’s name correctly (he pronounces it “Den Too”), he nonetheless appoints Densu to the position of his servant. For his new job, Densu is given new clothes—presumably, clothes fit for a servant.
Of course, Densu dresses as a servant because he’s really engaged in a spy mission. The reason why Densu seeks out Glover is to learn more about what Glover intends to do to the Asante army. The Asante army was led by Asamoa Nkwanta, who Densu met while embedded with the community of healers. It’s Asamoa who asks Densu to infiltrate Glover’s camp in Firaw and find out his plans and intentions.
Dressed as a servant, Densu can confirm the rumors that he’s been hearing about Glover. During the day, Glover is portrayed as gluttonous and gregarious. He drinks, throws around money, and amasses weapons. However, at night, Glover becomes isolated and anguished. He drinks alone in his tent and argues out loud with no one in particular. When a figure from Densu’s past comes to visit Glover, Densu’s true identity is all but exposed and Densu wisely escapes. All of this happens with Densu dressed as a Glover’s servant.
