In The Giver, what does Jonas learn about climate control?  

In The Giver, Jonas learns that his society controls many aspects of the natural elements, including climate. Jonas had never experienced snow, sunshine, or rain before his training with the Giver. The benefit of climate control is that there is no extreme weather that can be dangerous. The downside is that it eliminates pleasures of weather like sunshine and snow.

In the world in which Jonas lives, everything is the same for everyone, from the clothing they wear to the weather the experience. Thanks to the carefully controlled climate, Jonas knows nothing about sunshine, wind, snow, rain or hail. In the process of receiving the memories from the Giver, Jonas learns about the fact that weather existed and that their entire world is climate-controlled.

While the regulation of the weather had initially been implemented to ensure optimal conditions for growing crops, the powers that be soon realized that keeping the weather standard would be another way to organize and control their world. The other advantage of a “weatherless world” is that there is no danger of natural disasters such as tornadoes or storms.

When Jonas is receiving all the memories of the community, he gets to experience sledding. The Giver explains why the decision to do away with winter was made, citing the optimal growth of crops. There were also other issues, such as the...
