Shortly after Maniac Magee conquers the infamous Cobble's Knot, the surrounding crowd begins to cheer him on, and confetti is thrown into the air in celebration of his achievement. As Mr. Cobble hands Maniac his certificate for a year's worth of large pizzas, Maniac notices that Amanda Beale is the only person not cheering or yelling. He then watches as Amanda examines the scraps of homemade confetti and proceeds to frantically follow the paper trail back to her home. When Maniac begins to study the scraps of confetti, he realizes that they are pieces from Amanda's coveted encyclopedia. Maniac then races to 728 Sycamore, where he finds Amanda crying over her ruined encyclopedia. Maniac feels responsible for the destruction of Amanda's encyclopedia and realizes that he must leave the Beale home immediately in order to protect the family from jealous, prejudiced community members. Maniac attempts to head to the West End but is forced to walk directly down the middle of Hector until he is out of town.

The confetti incident happens right after Maniac Magee successfully unties the infamous "Cobble's Knot." Once he drops the untied knot to the ground, the crowd surrounding him begins to cheer and they start throwing homemade confetti. The whole thing is one big celebration.

However, in the midst of the festivities, Maniac's friend, Amanda, realizes that the confetti is actually made from the ripped up pages of her favorite book, the encyclopedia A. Understandably, she's distraught and starts following the paper trail (literally) to the front door of her house.

Maniac, of course, feels terrible about this because he knows Amanda's book was destroyed due to the fact that some of the East Enders don't want him in their neighborhood. Although he wants nothing more than to hug and comfort Amanda, he knows that if he sticks around, she'll continue to be harassed. So instead of doing that, Maniac decides to leave town.
