In J's estimation, his friend is a truly terrible cook. Even when she boils eggs, something that just about everyone can do, they somehow always manage to taste burnt.

Yet Melissa's patent lack of culinary skills doesn't stop her from trying to fix her mom and J some pancakes for breakfast. Melissa's mom politely—and wisely—declines her offer of pancakes. Before she leaves for her study group, she tells Melissa not to burn the place down.

Melissa plows on regardless, using the somewhat novel method of a turkey baster to squirt pancake batter into the pan. She shapes out the letter m, but it soon dissipates in a squidgy mess. The whole kitchen is filled with smoke from her previous failed efforts, which now sit in the trash.

J can see that Melissa's struggling, so he helps her out, turning the flame down a notch and using a couple of spatulas to flip the pancake. He also adds some butter that he finds at the back of the fridge. Despite J's best efforts, however, the end product is truly dire; the pancakes are absolutely disgusting. This is because Melissa hadn't used sugar or butter like you're supposed to and had even substituted water for milk.
