In chapter 8, we meet Toycie's boyfriend Emilio Sanchez Villanueva.

To Toycie, Emilio is the perfect boyfriend. He's strong, hardworking, and extremely capable. At seventeen, he can dive longer than any other boy his age. He can also scale and gut fish as fast as his grandfather.

Because Emilio fishes with his grandfather for the greater part of the day, he's only available for visits with Toycie in the afternoons and evenings.

In looking back, Beka remembers that Toycie would meet Emilio just before darkness descended on the island. On those days, Toycie would only return from her escapades well after midnight.

For her part, Beka feared that Toycie would end up hurt and alone. Often, she worriedly inquired about Emilio's intentions: did he have any intention of marrying her friend Toycie after graduation?

Although Toycie seemed to think so, Beka wasn't so sure. Even Granny Ivy had her doubts. The older woman maintained that Toycie was "trying to raise her colour" and that, if she wasn't careful, she would end up pregnant.

Beka did her best to warn Toycie, but the latter never heeded her words. In chapter 15, Toycie admitted to Beka that she was pregnant and desperate for Emilio to keep his promise. However, in chapter 16, we learn that Emilio had never intended to marry Toycie.

In fact, he refused to admit that he could have fathered the baby. With coldness, he told Toycie that he was slated to attend college in Mexico and that he could never marry a girl who was no longer a virgin. His sanctimonious attitude angered Beka, and his rejection crushed Toycie.
