Homer Barron is the man Miss Emily hoped to marry, and indeed the townspeople think they have been married when they see Miss Emily buy a man's toilet set and items with the initials "HB" on them, despite the fact that Homer remarks he is not a marrying man. It is not until after Miss Emily's death that we discover Miss Emily has poisoned Homer and his decaying body has been the source of the foul smell.

Homer and Miss Emily meet when Homer comes to town to work on the sidewalks with the construction company. Although we are not privy to the exact moment the two meet, we know that "soon he knew everybody in town" and therefore is a friendly and personable man.
