Steven Hawking is one of the famous scientists because he seems to appeal to everyone.  It might be because he seems to be disabled, and people are impressed and inspired by him.  Personally, I find it all very disturbing.

Never say never.  The history of science is fraught with barriers once thought to be impenetrable.

Steven Hawking (1942-) has recently been able to formulate interesting theories of the Big Bang, which did not need a primary mover; rather, it could have spontaneously erupted.  If proven so, this will undoubtedly move into a deeper philisophical argument about God.

Hawking added much to our ideas about the Big Bang and how the universe formed from that event. He has created a cogent set of arguments for why time can only flow forward and never in reverse, which essentially means that we cannot travel back in time. Hawking's work on black holes has added to our knowledge on the phenomenon of gravity. And, probably most importantly, Hawking has created a number of books and television specials which have made these complex physics topics understandable to ordinary people.
