If you were the lead trainer for your company, how would you go about trying to create an organization-wide commitment to sustainability? Why?

The best way to create an organization-wide commitment to sustainability is to involve all employees in the process. Employees should help to create or review the organization's sustainability policy, be regularly recognized and rewarded for contributing ideas, and reassured that the organization's commitment to sustainability is linked to other ethical policies and extends to ensuring sustainable lifestyles for employees.

The most effective way of ensuring that sustainability becomes an integral and pervasive culture in any organization is to involve all employees from the very beginning. If the organization has a sustainability plan already, give all employees time to read it and ask for their input in improving it. If no such plan exists, involve everyone throughout the company in creating one. In either case, make a regular commitment to updating the plan and involve everyone in the company at each stage.

To help motivate employees to contribute, there should be company-wide recognition and, ideally, a financial bonus for the employee who makes the greatest contribution to sustainability. This should occur on a regular basis, at least four times a year, with the employee's idea being implemented immediately. To showcase these ideas, there should be a regular "sustainability bulletin," with perhaps an annual reflection on all the policies that have been implemented in the last year and the difference they have made.

Finally, it is important to link sustainability, verbally and practically, to other ethical policies. Employees will not respond well to a focus on sustainability if it is combined with poor treatment of workers or bad policies in other areas. It must be emphasized that sustainability is not only a "green" policy, but includes a commitment to sustainable lifestyles for employees. This focus will allow all employees to feel that they have an investment in the company's sustainability policies and that the organization reflects and incorporates their own values.
