Identify the speaker, plot and significance of the following quotes from "The Most Dangerous Game"

 

1. "The door opened then - opened as suddenly as if it were on a spring - and Rainsford stood blinking in the river of glaring gold light that poured out.."

2. "Many of them afford only the most elementary sort of problem. Occasionally strike a tartar. One almost did win. I eventually had to use the dogs."

The first statement is not actually a character quotation but is a passage description spoken by the narrator. It refers to Rainsford's first glimpse inside General Zaroff's magnificent island home, and it introduces the reader to the Cossack general and his luxurious and eccentric tastes.

The second is a quotation spoken by Zaroff. He is speaking of the prisoners he has housed on the island that he uses for human hunting. It clearly defines his love of not only hunting but of making the kill in any way necessary. It also foreshadows Zaroff's plan to hunt a more worthy human prey: Rainsford himself.
