Please can you help me to come up with a topic for my assignment, below?
Identify a current event or contemporary social issue that involves human freedom. Your issue must be broad enough to sustain deep philosophical analysis and must have relevance to your community. A good choice of issue is one that (1) involves a decision that must be made, (2) includes with various available options about which reasonable minds can disagree, (3) concretely affects people’s lives, and (4) might be influenced by external and internal factors such as social norms, oppression, personal beliefs, socially-imposed constraints (such as laws), and physical limitations. Issues that only affect a few people or have only a minor impact are probably too narrow. Issues that you are not open to examining with an open mind will also not work well for this assignment. For some topic suggestions, you might want to browse some recent episodes of PBS’s Frontline series or the website of a reputable news organization.
The suggestions that are given here are going to be on you to investigate. The topic is so rich that there is much out there from which to choose. A really interesting topic is how big of a role does economics play in determining human freedom. Human freedom does exist, but its existence is impacted by material reality. Consider the plight of workers in places like Bangladesh that work in sweatshop conditions where the worst in safety violations, health conditions, and compensation packages exist. The decision that has to be made is whether or not these workers continue to work in conditions that endanger their lives for profit or if they reject this life and reject the money that goes along with it. Reasonable minds do disagree on this because many do not see this as a problem. They argue that this is the reality of the free market and the globalized world in which everyone is able to make money. It is argued that globalized trade made the ability for workers such as the ones in Bangladesh to have jobs in the first place, enabling them to expand their freedom. The reality of social and economic expectations, a lack of political leadership, and how an individual constructs their own freedom in the face of intense economic challenges are all present in this issue. The presence of human freedom in the sweatshop realities throughout the world could prove to be quite an interesting topic on freedom in the contemporary setting.
