Expatriate failure is the inability of foreign national to thrive in a host countries business or work environment. This failure could come about due to a number of factors, the primary reasons being:

  1. Poor candidate selection – This is when the person chosen for an overseas assignment is not the right fit for the position. They may not have the right attributes or personal situation that would allow them to successfully operate in a foreign environment.
  2. Lack of cultural knowledge – No knowledge of awareness of local customs, language or etiquette and little desire to learn them.
  3. Lack of cross-cultural training - This responsibility falls on the organization itself and failure to properly train expatriate staff could lead to those staff failing in their duties.
