Werner syndrome is a disease characterized by the premature appearance of features associated with normal aging and cancer predisposition. Individuals with this disease typically develop normally until they hit the years of puberty. It is then that symptoms appear. Some of the symptoms are graying hair, hoarse voice, thin and hardening skin, type 2 diabetes, cataracts, and some types of cancer. "Myocardial infarction and cancer are the most common causes of death, typically at about age 48 years." Due to the nature of the disease symptomatic treatment of related disturbances is recommended.
Treatments that have been utilized in the past have been more educational than anything. Advising the patient not to smoke, to control their weight, and other basic lifestyle education have been utilized.
Basic cataract treatments have been utilized as have cholesterol lowering drugs. Skin ulcers are treated with skin grafting and in some cases, hyperbaric oxygen therapy to ulcerous areas has shown promise as a treatment.
Recently a study was conducted on Recombinant Human Insulin-Like Growth Factor and its safety and impact for Werner's patients with Osteoporosis. The results have not yet been released.
Medications that have been used successfully are: Thiazolidinedione, Rosiglitazone, and Pioglitazone.
