Mustapha Kemal seems to have been far more open to outside influences than were the early leaders of Communist China, and he also seems to have been far more sincerely committed to democratic ideals than they were.

I would say that both men were similar in that they each hoped to do what was best for their country because they felt like their country was being led in the wrong direction by others. Each one used words very carefully and very effectively.

I would say that they were fairly different.  Ataturk was not trying to throw off outside domination.  He was also trying to modernize his country (in terms of its ways of thinking) in ways that were not so clearly happening in India and China.  In those countries, there was not the same sense of trying to break down old ways that there was in Ataturk's ideas.
