I have written an essay comparing George Orwell's 1984 and Cormac McCarthy's The Road that focuses on how human spirit overcomes dystopian pressures. I now need a few significant differences between them to add to a conclusion.

The main difference between the two novels is that in Orwell's text, the human spirit is ultimately unable to overcome dystopian influence. Winston and Julia's love is ruptured when they are arrested, tortured, and then finally brainwashed into accepting the ruling party. Unable to withstand torture from the Ministry of Love, they reject their love for one another and submit to Big Brother.

In The Road, love is the strongest bond of all, unable to be broken. It sustains the father and son as they wander through a violent, anarchic world. Nothing shakes the father's love for his boy, which is the sole factor keeping him going in a world that has become ever more dangerous. In comparison, Winston never seems to have known real love, as he cannot clearly recall his mother nor does he have true friends. As a result, the bond he has with Julia is far more fragile and more based on a desperate desire to escape dreary everyday life than anything else.
