I need MAJOR help on this topic. I need to write a thesis, but I just don't know how to start it.
From your study of Hamlet, consider instances where the struggle to act / procrastination is examined. Consider the influences that contribute to this struggle to act. How is this theme developed throughout the play?
I will greatly appreciate the help guys!
PS: It's due tommorow morning :(
In order to write a thesis statement you have to decide for yourself why Hamlet chooses not to act throughout the play. There are lots of possibilities, so you will need to review you understanding of his character and decide for yourself which you think will be the most supportable in your understanding of the play. Here are a few possible reasons why Hamlet doesn't act:
- He thinks too much about the idea of acting, and in the process he talks himself out of acting. Look at the "To be or not to be" soliloquy for more on this idea.
- He isn't really the type to go on a mission to murder someone -- it goes against his very moral nature.
- He is so depressed/melancholy over the state of things in Denmark, his father's murder and his mother's marriage, that he doesn't have the will to act.
- Can you think of some other reason why he delays action? That idea should be added to this list.
After you have considered the list, then you can decide on your focus. Answer the question "Why doesn't Hamlet act?" and that will be your thesis. As your post states, your essay will then go on to SHOW with examples from the text how that theme is developed in the play. Good luck!
