In today's global market, certain countries are able to produce goods far more cheaply than others due to economies of scale and scope. For example, one of the cheapest places to buy textiles and clothing is China. If we imagine a local company trying to sell clothing in an impoverished country, their prices are likely to be higher because they don't have these economies of scale and scope, nor do they have access to the cheap raw materials and labor that would be found in China.
