Carbon dioxide is the chief greenhouse gas that gets most of the consideration these days, when one thinks about global warming. There are two considerations when thinking about, the production of carbon dioxide and the consumption of carbon dioxide. Aside from us all holding our breath forever, one way to cut back on carbon dioxide production would be to cut back on the use of fossil fuels as an energy source. Fossil fuels all produce carbon dioxide and water when they are combusted to produce energy, so if we could come up with another way to manufacture energy besides burning fossil fuels, that would be great. On the consumption side of the problem, if you ever wonder why the great push to "go green", that comes from the fact that green plants take carbon dioxide, combine it with water and light energy from the sun in a process called photosynthesis to make their food, glucose, and give off oxygen as a waste product. So plant more green things, if you cut a tree down, replace it with another tree.
The burning of fossil fuels causes most of our release of greenhouse gases. Therefore, limiting our uses of fossil fuels is one of the best things we can do to limit the emissions of greenhouse gases. Fuel effiencient vehicles, carpooling, public transportation, all limit fossil fuel use. We can also use more "green" technologies, such as solar power, wind power, and hydropower, since the electricity used to power our homes generally comes from fossil fuels. Reducing our own electricity use also helps reduce the release of greenhouse gases, so we can turn off lights and unplug appliances when not in use. The burning of forests to clear them also releases greenhouse gases, while simultaneously taking away a method of removing the gases (photosynthesis). We can use our power as consumers to reduce this by buying sustainable food products (such as shade grown coffee).
There are plenty of things we as responsible citizens can do to protect our planet-
-Simple things like car pooling, not wasting electricity can do wonders
-Major afforestation programmes. Trees absorb carbon dioxide,a greenhouse gas
-Use of eco friendly technology like solar energy, wind energy and biomass energy.Further study into these fields to make these sources of energy as efficient as their conventional counterparts like fossil fuels
-Awareness through education and community participation programmes
