Theobroma cacao or the Chocolate tree is a rainforest tree. Its scientific name means, food of the gods. It is thought that this plant was cultivated about 1000 B.C. by either the Olmec or the Maya. There are 150 different chemicals found in the leaves, fruit, seeds and bark of this plant. There are antioxidants found in this plant that can protect against cancer, heart disease and aid in strengthening the immune system. It was used to treat anxiety, fever, fatigue and coughs by the ancients. Later, it was brought to Europe to treat cuts, burns and kidney stones. Today, it is used in the production of cocoa powder and chocolate. Chocolate is a "feel good" food that enhances mood and is also healthy to the body.
