The Greek historian Herodotus is often referred to as the "father of history". This refers to his work on the history of the Persian wars of the mid-fifth century.

To understand the origins of history means to think about the nature of historical studies as a discipline. History consists of an account of events that attempts to give the raw information coherence and meaning as a chronological narrative and sorts through raw data to assess reliability of source material. Thus, although there are chronicles such as the Sumerian king lists from as early as 3000 BC, they are not considered histories because they are simply the raw materials from which histories are constructed. Herodotus, on the other hand, often comments on the credibility of his sources and the significance of events.
