The current structure of the relationship between Shoba and Shukumar has changed to one of almost complete isolation and they ignore each other because they cannot face the horrible pain of losing their child. The nature of their lives previously had been based around thinking of the future, they shopped for food that would last them for weeks or months, they thought and talked and dreamt about the future and what it would hold for them but the death of their child shattered all of that.
It even becomes a weapon for Shukumar to use against his wife when he describes what their stillborn child looked like to try and hurt her when she says she is moving out.
