Squanto was very important to the Pilgrims. The Pilgrims had many disadvantages to overcome. Because they arrived in North America much later than planned, they faced issues such as disease, shortage of food, unfamiliarity with the land, and potentially unfriendly Native American tribes. Squanto helped the Pilgrims to deal with their food issues. He taught them how to fish and how to plant crops which could survive the rough conditions in the area. He also showed the Pilgrims the lay of the land using his vast knowledge of the area. As a result of his actions, he developed a friendly relationship with the Pilgrims. He was able to help improve and develop relations between the Pilgrims and his Native American tribe, the Wampanoag. From this friendly relationship, we get the Thanksgiving story and subsequent holiday. Squanto was very important in helping the Pilgrims establish themselves in North America.
