Twilight is a romance fantasy novel, one of a five-part series written by American author Stephanie Meyer.

Edward Cullen is the handsome protagonist of the series, and he has many superhero qualities, including super strength, super speed, and the ability to read minds. But Edward is not a superhero, he is a vampire, and, although the story is set at the beginning of the twenty-first century, he was actually born in Chicago in 1901.

The novel’s narrator, the seventeen-year-old Bella Swan, falls in love with Edward before discovering that he is a vampire, and Edward is conflicted, as, although he loves Bella too, he has to fight his vampire instincts to kill her. He tells her that he hasn’t feasted on humans for decades but admits that after he first saw her in a Biology lesson, he couldn’t stop thinking of all the ways he could get to her blood.

To me, it was like you were some kind of demon, summoned straight from my own personal hell to ruin me.

Edward sees himself as a monster and is terrified that he may lose control and hurt the girl he loves so much.

I couldn't live with myself if I ever hurt you. You don't know how it's tortured me.

But Bella believes that the good in Edward outweighs the bad and refers to him as being angelic many times. And, although Edward tells her he is dangerous, she is unable to resist him.

I would rather die than stay away from you.
