It is not completely clear that people from different generations need to be motivated in different ways. However, many people who have worked with the younger generation of workers today do think that this generation is motivated by somewhat different factors than the older generation ways. Let us look at some of the things that are said to motivate the new generation.
- The feeling that they are doing good. The new generation tends to be more socially conscious and wants to do things that will help others. It therefore makes sense to allow them to use some company time and resources to do things that further causes that are important to them.
- The feeling that they are important to the firm. Because the new generation likes to feel this way, it makes sense to give them more information and feedback. For example, it can be good to let them in on the firm’s overall vision and the overall vision for any given project or department. This allows them to feel that they know how they are relevant. It is also good to give them a lot of little feedback so that they know what they are doing well and what they need to do better.
- Flexibility. The new generation likes to have options. Therefore, it makes sense to give them more flexibility when this is consistent with the firm’s needs.
