Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, which is the first book in the seven-part Harry Potter series, has seventeen chapters.

It tells the story of a young boy named Harry Potter, who has been raised by his uncaring aunt and uncle in the aftermath of his parents' death, which he has always been told was in a car accident.

Early in the story, Harry learns that he is in fact a wizard, and that his parents were murdered by Lord Voldemort, the most evil wizard who ever lived. Against the wishes of his aunt and uncle, Harry starts attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he makes friends (for the first time in his life) with Ron and Hermione. He attends lessons in subjects that he never would have imagined existing, such as Potions, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Transfiguration.

For the first time in his life, Harry feels like he belongs, and all the strange things that used to happen around him make sense now that he knows he has magical powers.

The book follows Harry through his first year at Hogwarts, with the climax being another confrontation between Harry and Lord Voldemort—who, due to losing his powers when he tried to kill Harry, is currently sharing a body with Professor Quirrell, Harry's Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.
