When Nick Allen was a student at Lincoln Elementary School, Mrs. Granger had already been a teacher there for a long time. She was described as having white hair and never wearing pants, which younger teachers at the school wore. At the end of the book, in Mrs. Granger's letter to Nick, we found out that she was in her forty-fifth year of teaching and was set to retire in June. In the letter, Mrs. Granger explained to Nick that when she began teaching, the world was a very different place. No one had yet landed on the moon and the space shuttle had not been invented. She told him that there were no computers, CDs, or weather satellites. She wanted to instill knowledge in her students that would be useful to them no matter what changed.
