Hemingway's code hero is a man who could be identified as a man's man.  He likes to drink, have affairs with women, engage in physical activities such as hunting or fishing.  He is stoic and courageous in the face of danger, and handles the challenges of the world with grace and dignity.  The American in the short story "Hills Like White Elephants " shows some of the characteristics of this stock character.  This story is almost entirely a dialogue between a girl named Jig and the American.  It is told from an objective point of view, so what we know about the male character comes primarily from this conversation and a few descriptive details provided about the setting.  In this...
