How does a Greaser behave, and how does a Soc act?

As was mentioned in the previous post, the Greasers and Socs share some similarities. Members of both gangs enjoy partying, fighting, and hanging out with girls. However, the Socs are rarely punished for their behavior because they come from affluent families. In a conversation between Cherry and Ponyboy, she explains that the majority of Socs act aloof and superficial. She describes her social group as a "rat race" where everybody is competing against one another. In Cherry's opinion, the Socs are callous individuals who do not genuinely share their feelings. They are too busy trying to act cool in hopes of impressing other people. In contrast, the Greasers are authentic with each other and are not afraid to share their feelings. They are sensitive to each other's needs and are always willing to help one another out. For example, Darry allows gang members to crash at his house when they have nowhere to stay, and Dally helps Johnny and Pony escape from the police. The Socs are portrayed as bullies, and the Greasers are depicted as outcasts who are simply trying to defend themselves.

In some ways, the members of the two gangs tend to act quite a bit alike.  They are both very concerned with looking out for the other members of the gang, for example.  But there are quite a few important differences too.

For one, we do not hear about any of the greasers going around looking for Socs to beat up.  Socs do that, which is what we see early in the book with Pony and what leads to Bob Sheldon being killed.

For another, the greasers seem to like to act somewhat more antisocial.  The Socs need to look like they are good kids.  The greasers are more free to act up.  They are willing to do things like how Dallas is harassing the Soc girls at the drive in.
