I think you are asking how children should be disciplined. I do think that going too far backfires. To me, corporal punishment is counterproductive. I do not think that a powerful adult should be hitting a powerless child.

I think that it is vital that children should be disciplined so that they will know to obey their parents and authority figures, at least in important things.  It drives me crazy when I see parents who tell their children "time to go" and the children don't come.  I do not think that is acceptable at all.

At the same time, I do not believe in corporal punishment.  I have never had to hit either of my kids (8 and 5) and I do not intend to.  I believe the studies that say that physical punishment does not work.

So I believe that kids must learn to do what they are told, but I do not think they should be hit.

(I should also say that I do not think that a parent should boss their kids around for no good reason.  Anyone who's seen my kids' rooms knows that I'm not exactly demanding that everything be done my way.  But when I tell my kids to do something, they understand that I mean it...)
