You can find the answer to this question at the very start of Chapter 14 in Maniac Magee.  The basic answer is that Maniac loves the early morning.

In this chapter, Maniac has just started his “new life.”  He has just moved in with the Beale family after having been on his own for a long time.  He loves everything about his new life.  One of the things he loves is going out in the early mornings to walk Bow Wow, the Beale family dog.  The narrator tells us that Maniac loves the early mornings because of the quiet, the newness of the morning, and the fact that he could be alone.  We are told that this was the time

When it seemed as if the whole world had been created just before he woke up…

We are then told that

He loved the silence and solitude.

So, we can see from this how Maniac felt about early morning.  He loved that time of day, though we must also note that he loved everything else about this new life as well.
