How does this quote show qualitites of Joe Bank's character?
At the beginning when Joe comes home he does a certain routine, “But before she could tie her slippers, there came the ring of singing metal on wood. Nine times.” Also again after the couples son is born Joe comes back home, “ Joe reached his own front door. There was the ring of singing metal on wood. Fifteen times. Missie May couldn’t run to the door, but she crept there as quickly as she could.”
One of the important things about Joe and Missie's relationship is its playful nature. Joe's job is not one that is going to pay him a lot of money and so they don't have some of the comforts or the pleasures that people think of when they think of a happy marriage or family. But what they do have is their very playful relationship, particularly from Joe.
When Joe comes home on payday, he likes to roll the coins he is paid across the threshhold, making a game and a pleasure out of it even though it isn't a lot of money.
The other important thing it shows is Joe's sweetness and the innocence he maintains about their relationship. He is so proud to have Missie as his wife and he enjoys making a sort of game out of their relationship, almost as if he is still courting her. This becomes more important and even more evident later in the story when it comes time to deal with Missie's infidelity.
