How do entertainment portrayals of the mafia hinder the accuracy of the public's perceptions organized crime?
Because of the way that the mafia and other groups like that are portrayed, we see them as similar to Robin Hood or to people like that. We see them as people who are really not that much of a threat to ordinary people. They are people who will attack other gangsters or who will attack other kinds of people who deserve it. But they do not prey on innocent people. This hinders the accuracy of our conception of them. We do not see the ways in which the mafia actually do hurt regular people whenever those people happen to get in their way.
