Following Catherine's death, Archilde, Elise, Mike, and Narcisse disappear into the mountains. Elise leads the group along a circuitous path to a place where she believes they will be safe. However, they are not. One evening, Sheriff Quigley walks into their camp. Calmly, Elise offers Quigley a cup of coffee. Just before she hands the hot coffee to him, Elisa throws it in his face, and in the commotion, shoots the Sheriff dead. Mike and Narcisse are able to escape but Elise and Archilde are captured by the Indian commissioner and the tribal policeman who are hiding in the bushes just outside of the camp.
