Crane's story is focused upon those elements of a battle that the ordinary soldier or field officer is not usually aware of, because they're in effect hidden from him. The lieutenant is wounded and has to have his arm treated. This is what enables him to see what looks like "an historical painting" of a messenger galloping up to the general and delivering him a paper. The "war-chorus " of the battery is another element in this back-story. Again, the infantry officers and soldiers engaged in their own part in the shooting war on the ground normally...
