How does the Supreme Court’s decision in each case continue to affect the rights of American citizens today?
Anytime the Supreme Court considers a case in has impact on the American public in some fashion. Under the Constitution citizens are guaranteed certain rights and freedoms. These freedoms must always be balanced with the rights of the individual and needs of society at large. When a state passes a law which limits or expands a right it is the obligation of the Supreme Court to review and determine whether it meets the requirements of the Constitution. Cases involving speech, religion, gender bias, criminals’ rights, and discrimination all potentially could affect the public. Once the Court rules its decisions have the effect and permanency of law.
