How does Sam Dale die in Losing Battles by Eudora Welty?

Sam Dale dies in World War I though he does not in active combat. He is the youngest of Granny's grandsons. His death occurs well before the time of the story. The details of Sam's death are not important to the story though whether or not Sam is Gloria's father is important.
