Religion offers one type of answer to the question of how we should live our lives. While solutions vary from religion to religion, they do have certain elements in common.

Most religions assume the existence of one or more gods and assert that a morally good life is one of which the gods approve. Many religions have scriptural texts which set out both moral and behavioral guidelines for their followers. Some religions offer detailed prescriptions concerning diet, lifestyle, and required religious observances, while other religions offer more general guidelines concerning morality and piety.

In general, religious groups believe that our purpose in life is not simply to acquire material goods or maximize sensual pleasure. Instead, most religions argue that life has a higher purpose and that people should act in a way that respects God (or gods) and other people. Most religions emphasize the importance of treating other people well and doing some form of charitable or good works.
