Ponyboy does not go into great detail about his feelings regarding his parents' tragic deaths, which took place eight months before the start of the story. He does mentions that his parents were killed in a car wreck and Darry was forced to pick up an extra job to take care of him and Soda. Although Pony does not elaborate on his immediate reaction to his parents' deaths, he does dream about them often.
In one of Pony's dreams, he brings his mother and father back to life and imagines what it would be like living on an estate in the country with them. Pony dreams about his father feeding the cattle every day and joking with his oldest son, Darry. Pony also dreams about his mother talking to Dally and making him grin in spite of himself.
Judging from Pony's dream and his brief comments about his mother and father, it is apparent that he had a positive relationship with them and probably misses them terribly. Eight months is not a long time, and Pony is still a relatively young teenager. One could surmise that Pony has yet to fully grieve over his parents' deaths and is simply attempting to restore order back to his life. Pony was more than likely shocked by the news of their deaths and became emotionally fragile. Unlike Darry's sudden change in attitude and personality, Pony has yet to fully experience the impact of his parents' deaths and is still attempting to get by each day without them.
