I would not really say that Pip suffers from want and privation, especially not if you compare him to other Dickens characters like Oliver Twist who really is poor. He has a house, he has his own room, he gets fed the same as the rest of the family.
What makes life unpleasant is how mean his sister is and how much she hits hit. She hits him with her stick for being out too long. She hits him for asking too many questions. She pulls him up by his hair to dose him with tar water when she thinks he's eaten his food too fast. In general, she's just pretty harsh with him.
