How does the party in 1984 manipulate its society and how is it related to Winston's existence?

I'm not even up to the introduction! I really don't know how to start off with this prompt?! Can someone tell me how they would go on about this topic?

I think that the primary level that you would want to investigate would be on the ways in which the party seeks to control the lives of its citizens.  At some level, I believe you would want to discuss how there is no private realm in this setting.  The government featured in Orwell's work is all public.  The private lives of the individuals have to be controlled by the public realm because it could be viewed as a source of resistance, an element that the government has consciously taken the point of view in eliminating.  For example, I would analyze the anti- sex movement that Julia is both a part of and actively against with her actions with Winston.  Additionally, I would focus on how after their first lovemaking session Winston is able to analyze the act as an act of resistance.  In the setting offered, The Party is able to manipulate its society by ensuring that there is little opportunity to create a private life outside of the public realm of complete submission to Big Brother.  Analyzing how the private realm has been subsumed might be one step you can take in analyzing this process.
